ICMA Public Library Innovation Grants–Mary Suhm and Laurie Evans, Dallas, TX

ICMA Public Library Innovation Grants--Mary Suhm and Laurie Evans, Dallas, TX

Mary Suhm, City Manager, Dallas, TX discusses the role of libraries in her community and the importance for city and county managers to recognize libraries as a core service. Laurie Evans, Director of the Dallas Public Library, explains how libraries contribute to all areas of local government services by supporting a literate community. The Ready to Read @ Dallas has helped prepare 40000 children to read. The ICMA Public Library Innovation Grant program leverages the potential of public libraries to deliver services in such nontraditional areas as technology, public safety, economic development, health, immigration, civic engagement, and sustainability. Recognizing the importance of the manager-librarian relationship to create and sustain change, the grants are anchored by a partnership between the office of the chief administrative officer (city, town, and county managers) and the public library.
